How to choose an asbestos tester in Wellington

Testing does not need a licence, but removal often does. Removing any friable (crumbly) asbestos needs a Class A licence, and removing more than 10 square metres of non-friable asbestos needs a Class B licence, counted across the whole job. Licensed removers must notify WorkSafe before the work starts, and the area cannot be used again until a clearance certificate is issued. Check the WorkSafe register.

  1. Ask whether samples go to an IANZ-accredited laboratory, and how long results take.
  2. For a renovation or demolition, ask for a refurbishment or demolition survey, not just one sample.
  3. Ask what the call-out fee covers, and what each extra sample costs.
  4. If asbestos is found, check the remover on the WorkSafe licence holder register before you hire them.
  5. Do not disturb a suspect material while you wait for results.

Get at least two written quotes for the same job, and read recent Google reviews rather than relying on the star rating alone. A listing here is not a recommendation: “Listed” businesses have not yet been checked by LocalsBest.
