How much does a dentist cost in New Zealand? (2026 prices)
Consumer NZ reports a 2025 NZ Dental Association survey average of about $129 for an exam with bitewing X-rays and $102 for a 15-minute scale and polish. A separate cost guide estimates composite fillings at $200–$400 and crowns at $1,200–$2,500. Publicly funded basic dental care is available to eligible children and adolescents until their 18th birthday; some services or private care may fall outside that scope.

What changes the price
- Publicly funded basic oral health care is available to children and adolescents until their 18th birthday through the relevant public and contracted services; check which treatments are covered.
- Simple extractions sit at the low end of the range; surgical and wisdom tooth extractions cost more.
- Ask whether a check-up price includes x-rays and a clean, or whether those are charged separately.
- ACC helps with dental injuries from accidents, but pays a set amount that may leave a gap.
- Fees have risen steadily: the typical exam, x-ray, clean and filling visit is estimated at $559 in 2026, up from $428 in 2020.
Getting a fair quote
- Check the dentist on the Dental Council's public register.
- Ask for a written treatment plan with a price for each item before any major work.
- Ask what a check-up includes. Some prices include x-rays and a clean; others charge them separately.
- For under-18s, ask whether the practice is contracted to provide free adolescent dental care.
Where these prices come from
We do not invent price ranges. Every figure in the table comes from a price guide published by a New Zealand business, directory or government agency, linked below, and is shown as that source published it. These are typical ranges, not quotes. Your price will depend on your job, your location and the business, so get at least two written quotes.
