What changes the price
- After-hours, weekend and public holiday work costs noticeably more. One Auckland rate guide puts weekend and holiday rates at $180 to $300+ an hour.
- Access drives cost. One Auckland plumber quotes about $250 for an easy-access ceiling pipe and more than $1,000 for a pipe under a concrete slab.
- Older homes with galvanised pipe or low-pressure systems often need extra compliance work when a fixture or cylinder is replaced.
- Check whether each figure includes GST. The Plumberz hourly range is quoted excluding 15% GST; FlowPro does not state a GST basis for its table.
Getting a fair quote
- Check the PGDB public register for the person who will do the work, not only the business owner, and confirm their licence is current.
- Ask whether the price is a fixed quote or an estimate, and whether it includes GST (15%), call-out, travel and materials.
- For any work that needs a building consent, such as a new bathroom or moving drains, ask who applies for it and who books the inspections.
- For hot water cylinders, ask for the brand, capacity and warranty in writing, and whether the price covers disposal of the old cylinder and any compliance upgrades such as seismic restraints or valves.
Where these prices come from
We do not invent price ranges. Every figure in the table comes from a price guide published by a New Zealand business, directory or government agency, linked below, and is shown as that source published it. These are typical ranges, not quotes. Your price will depend on your job, your location and the business, so get at least two written quotes.
