How much does a financial adviser cost in New Zealand? (2026 prices)
Become Wealth's review of a small published sample suggests $1,500–$5,000 for a comprehensive plan, $200–$400 for hourly investment advice, and 0.25%–1.5% a year for ongoing portfolio management, with around 1% common in that sample outside KiwiSaver. It says no official New Zealand-wide adviser-fee survey exists; ask for all-in dollar costs, including any minimums and product charges.

What changes the price
- A minimum yearly fee can raise the effective rate on smaller portfolios: a $3,000 minimum on $150,000 is 2%, not 1%.
- Some advisers are paid by product providers instead of by you, and some use both. They must disclose this before you act.
- Tiered percentage fees can apply to the whole balance or only to each band. Ask for the dollar fee at your balance.
- GST sometimes applies to adviser fees. A quote should say whether it is included.
- There is no official survey of New Zealand adviser fees, so these ranges come from a published sample, not market averages.
Getting a fair quote
- Check the adviser and their financial advice provider on the Financial Service Providers Register.
- Read their disclosure statement: how they are paid, any commissions, conflicts and the limits of what they advise on.
- Ask for every fee in dollars at your balance, not only percentages, and whether GST is included.
- For percentage fees, ask whether there is a minimum fee. A minimum can double the effective rate on a smaller portfolio.
Where these prices come from
We do not invent price ranges. Every figure in the table comes from a price guide published by a New Zealand business, directory or government agency, linked below, and is shown as that source published it. These are typical ranges, not quotes. Your price will depend on your job, your location and the business, so get at least two written quotes.
