How to choose a vet in Wellington

Yes. Under the Veterinarians Act 2005, anyone practising as a vet in New Zealand must be registered with the Veterinary Council of New Zealand and hold a current practising certificate. You can check any vet on the Council's public register. Check the Veterinary Council register.

  1. Ask the price of a standard consultation, and of urgent and after-hours visits.
  2. For desexing or surgery, get a written estimate that covers anaesthetic, pain relief and follow-up visits.
  3. Ask where you would go after hours, and whether your vet shares records with that emergency clinic.
  4. Ask whether they offer a health plan that bundles vaccinations, flea and worm treatment and check-ups.
  5. Check the vet on the Veterinary Council's public register.

Get at least two written quotes for the same job, and read recent Google reviews rather than relying on the star rating alone. A listing here is not a recommendation: “Listed” businesses have not yet been checked by LocalsBest.
