How to choose a tyre shop in Wellington

Tyre shops do not need a licence, but your tyres must meet the law. Car tyres need at least 1.5 mm of tread across three-quarters of the tread width, all the way around the tyre, with no cuts, bulges or exposed cords. From 1 November 2026 the infringement fee for non-compliant wheels and tyres rises from $150 to $350, with a court fine of up to $1,000. Check the NZTA register.

  1. Compare the all-in price per tyre: the tyre, fitting, balancing, valve and disposal of the old tyre.
  2. Ask for the brand and model, and check the manufacture date on the sidewall. Tyres age even when they sit unused.
  3. Make sure the size, load rating and speed rating match the placard on your car or the owner's manual.
  4. Ask whether a wheel alignment is needed and what it costs before the new tyres go on. Poor alignment wears new tyres unevenly.
  5. For a puncture, ask whether it can be safely repaired. Damage to the sidewall or shoulder usually cannot.

Get at least two written quotes for the same job, and read recent Google reviews rather than relying on the star rating alone. A listing here is not a recommendation: “Listed” businesses have not yet been checked by LocalsBest.
