How to choose a panel beater in Wellington

No. Panel beaters are not licensed in New Zealand. The useful signals are trade qualifications, membership of the Collision Repair Association or the Motor Trade Association, which both run standards for members, and whether your insurer approves the shop. Under the Consumer Guarantees Act, repairs must be done with reasonable care and skill. Check the CRA register.

  1. Get a written quote that lists parts, labour and paint, and whether parts are new genuine, aftermarket or second-hand.
  2. For an insurance claim, check your policy: some insurers let you choose the repairer, others use an approved list.
  3. Compare the repair cost with your excess. For small jobs it can be cheaper to pay yourself.
  4. Ask about the warranty on paint and workmanship, and how long they will need the car.
  5. If your car has driver assistance cameras or sensors in the bumper, ask whether they will be recalibrated after the repair.

Get at least two written quotes for the same job, and read recent Google reviews rather than relying on the star rating alone. A listing here is not a recommendation: “Listed” businesses have not yet been checked by LocalsBest.
