How to choose a painter in Wellington

Painting is not a licensed trade in New Zealand. Master Painters New Zealand membership is the main quality signal, and members can offer the association's guarantee. On homes built before the 1980s, assume there may be lead-based paint and ask how the painter tests for it and contains it. Check the Master Painters NZ register.

  1. Ask exactly what preparation is included: washing, sanding, filling, priming, and how many top coats.
  2. Ask which paint brand and product range they will use, and get it written on the quote.
  3. For pre-1980s homes, ask how they test for lead paint and what containment and clean-up they use.
  4. Check whether scaffolding, plant protection and clean-up are included in the price.
  5. Ask whether they are Master Painters NZ members and whether the job comes with a guarantee.

Get at least two written quotes for the same job, and read recent Google reviews rather than relying on the star rating alone. A listing here is not a recommendation: “Listed” businesses have not yet been checked by LocalsBest.
