How to choose an electrician in Wellington

Prescribed electrical work in New Zealand must be done by a registered electrical worker with a current practising licence, under the Electricity Act 1992. You can search any electrician on the EWRB public register. After the work, the electrician must give you a Certificate of Compliance and, when the installation is connected, an Electrical Safety Certificate. Check the EWRB register.

  1. Search the EWRB register for the electrician who will do the work and confirm the licence is current.
  2. Ask whether the hourly rate excludes GST and what the minimum charge is. Most electricians charge at least one hour.
  3. Ask for a Certificate of Compliance when the job is done. It is a legal requirement for prescribed electrical work, and you will need it when you sell or insure the house.
  4. For EV chargers and heat pumps, ask whether they have checked your switchboard and supply capacity, and whether an upgrade is included in the price.
  5. On older homes, ask the electrician to tell you in writing whether they found wiring that needs replacing, rather than a verbal 'should be fine'.

Get at least two written quotes for the same job, and read recent Google reviews rather than relying on the star rating alone. A listing here is not a recommendation: “Listed” businesses have not yet been checked by LocalsBest.
