How to choose a tyre shop in Auckland
Tyre shops do not need a licence, but your tyres must meet the law. Car tyres need at least 1.5 mm of tread across three-quarters of the tread width, all the way around the tyre, with no cuts, bulges or exposed cords. From 1 November 2026 the infringement fee for non-compliant wheels and tyres rises from $150 to $350, with a court fine of up to $1,000. Check the NZTA register.
- Compare the all-in price per tyre: the tyre, fitting, balancing, valve and disposal of the old tyre.
- Ask for the brand and model, and check the manufacture date on the sidewall. Tyres age even when they sit unused.
- Make sure the size, load rating and speed rating match the placard on your car or the owner's manual.
- Ask whether a wheel alignment is needed and what it costs before the new tyres go on. Poor alignment wears new tyres unevenly.
- For a puncture, ask whether it can be safely repaired. Damage to the sidewall or shoulder usually cannot.
