How to choose a real estate agent in Auckland

Anyone who sells property for a client in New Zealand must be licensed by the Real Estate Authority under the Real Estate Agents Act 2008. Before you sign, the agent must give you a written appraisal supported by sales of similar properties, explain in writing how your home will be marketed and what that will cost, and give you the New Zealand Residential Property Agency Agreement Guide. You can check any agent, and any upheld complaints against them, on the REA public register. Check the REA register.

  1. Check the agent on the REA public register, including any upheld complaints.
  2. Get written appraisals from at least two agents and ask which recent sales support each one. A high appraisal is not a promise.
  3. Get the commission in writing with a worked example at your expected price, including any admin fee and GST.
  4. Ask for the marketing plan and cost, and when you pay it. Sellers often pay for advertising before marketing starts, even if the home does not sell.
  5. Read the agency agreement for its end date and how to cancel, ask about the risk of paying two commissions, and get legal advice before you sign.

Get at least two written quotes for the same job, and read recent Google reviews rather than relying on the star rating alone. A listing here is not a recommendation: “Listed” businesses have not yet been checked by LocalsBest.
