How to choose a landscaper in Auckland

Landscaping is not a licensed trade in New Zealand, so industry body membership, a portfolio of finished work and verifiable reviews matter more. Some landscaping jobs are building work: retaining walls that hold back more than 1.5 metres of ground or support a surcharge such as a driveway, and decks more than 1.5 metres above ground, need a building consent. Check the Landscaping NZ register.

  1. Look at photos of finished jobs similar to yours and ask for addresses or references.
  2. Get a written quote that separates labour, materials, plants and disposal, and says whether it includes GST.
  3. For retaining walls and raised decks, ask whether a building consent and engineer are needed and who arranges them.
  4. Ask how they will handle drainage behind walls and under paving. It is where cheap jobs fail first.
  5. Ask whether plants are guaranteed for a period after planting and what aftercare you need to do.

Get at least two written quotes for the same job, and read recent Google reviews rather than relying on the star rating alone. A listing here is not a recommendation: “Listed” businesses have not yet been checked by LocalsBest.
