How to choose a handyman in Auckland

Handymen can do general repairs, maintenance, assembly and small jobs without a licence. Electrical work needs a registered electrician, plumbing and gasfitting need a PGDB-licensed tradesperson, and restricted building work, such as structural work or weathertightness, needs a Licensed Building Practitioner. Ask before booking if a job touches wiring, pipes or the structure of your home. Check the LBP register.

  1. Write a list of every job so you can get a price for the whole visit, or book a half or full day.
  2. Ask for the hourly rate, the minimum charge and whether materials are included.
  3. Ask whether weekend or after-hours work costs more.
  4. Check they have public liability insurance.
  5. Check the job does not need a licensed electrician, plumber or builder.

Get at least two written quotes for the same job, and read recent Google reviews rather than relying on the star rating alone. A listing here is not a recommendation: “Listed” businesses have not yet been checked by LocalsBest.
