How to choose a financial adviser in Auckland

Financial advice to the public must be given by, or on behalf of, a financial advice provider (FAP) licensed by the Financial Markets Authority, and advisers must be on the Financial Service Providers Register. Advisers must follow the Code of Professional Conduct for Financial Advice Services. Before you act on advice, they must tell you their fees, any commissions and conflicts, and the scope of their advice. Check the FAP register.

  1. Check the adviser and their financial advice provider on the Financial Service Providers Register.
  2. Read their disclosure statement: how they are paid, any commissions, conflicts and the limits of what they advise on.
  3. Ask for every fee in dollars at your balance, not only percentages, and whether GST is included.
  4. For percentage fees, ask whether there is a minimum fee. A minimum can double the effective rate on a smaller portfolio.
  5. Ask whether they recommend in-house products, and how they compare them with alternatives.

Get at least two written quotes for the same job, and read recent Google reviews rather than relying on the star rating alone. A listing here is not a recommendation: “Listed” businesses have not yet been checked by LocalsBest.
