How to choose a dentist in Auckland

Yes. Dentists, dental hygienists and dental therapists are registered health practitioners under the Health Practitioners Competence Assurance Act 2003. Each must be registered with the Dental Council of New Zealand and hold a current annual practising certificate. You can check any of them on the Dental Council's public register. Check the Dental Council register.

  1. Check the dentist on the Dental Council's public register.
  2. Ask for a written treatment plan with a price for each item before any major work.
  3. Ask what a check-up includes. Some prices include x-rays and a clean; others charge them separately.
  4. For under-18s, ask whether the practice is contracted to provide free adolescent dental care.
  5. If cost is a barrier, ask Work and Income about a Special Needs Grant for urgent dental treatment.

Get at least two written quotes for the same job, and read recent Google reviews rather than relying on the star rating alone. A listing here is not a recommendation: “Listed” businesses have not yet been checked by LocalsBest.
