How to choose a car service centre in Auckland

No. New Zealand has no licence for servicing cars. Useful signals are qualified technicians, Motor Trade Association (MTA) membership, which gives you its disputes process, and a clear written list of what each package includes. Under the Consumer Guarantees Act, a service must be done with reasonable care and skill. Check the MTA register.

  1. Compare packages by what they include, not by name. Ask for the checklist and how many litres and what grade of oil the price covers.
  2. Ask whether your car needs a dearer oil. Many newer and European cars specify a full synthetic oil, which moves you to a higher price tier.
  3. Agree that they will phone you before doing any work or fitting any parts beyond the package, and get the price first.
  4. If the car is under a new-car warranty, check its servicing conditions and keep every invoice as service history.
  5. Ask whether the package includes a WOF, or what a WOF costs if done at the same visit.

Get at least two written quotes for the same job, and read recent Google reviews rather than relying on the star rating alone. A listing here is not a recommendation: “Listed” businesses have not yet been checked by LocalsBest.
